Things that have helped me make music-part 2-drum software Aug 4, 2023

My first encounter with synthetic drums was when I got a Boss DR55 Dr Rhythm box ( a long time ago!). I thought it was great at the time. Drum noises, controllable, available whenever it suited me. What’s not to like? I recently listened to some recordings that I made with it. Ouch! The songs weren’t any good and the drums were robotic, tinny sounds, I drenched them in reverb. Oh dear. Maybe that was fashionable at the time…. I progressed. I got a Kawai R50. Better. Better sounds and programmability. I liked it. Still not a drummer! Fast forward several years and I’m now using a Digital Audio Workstation (Presonus Studio One). I can get drum patterns in (real time or step recording) and there are endless high quality sounds. I can import loops as wav files of real drummers playing, even famous ones like Simon Philips. My drum tracks are now much better, both sounds and feel. But…. It’s a bit laborious and time consuming. I tried inputting patterns using a pad controller. But I’m not a drummer-they’re never good enough! What now? I can’t remember how I came across it, but I discovered EZ drummer 2. Wow. Great drum sounds played by real drummers but now I can create drum parts with ease. Loads of choices but the program helps me find what I’m looking for and then order parts easily. Or it will create a song using recognised arrangements. I’ve found my drummer! This definitely improved my music. Then EZ drummer 3 was released. Even better! I upgraded and am very happy with the latest incarnation. I won’t list all of it’s features but add a link. https://www.toontrack.com/product/ezdrummer-3/ I continue to be really happy using and being inspired by it. There is , of course, no substitute for a really great drummer recorded in a fantastic studio but I’m not lucky enough to be able to tap into that. EZ drummer has helped me some way towards it. I would recommend a look. There’s a free trial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hexo5mGvagA P.S I’m not on the payroll!
