Inspiration-Where does that come from?
I’m first and foremost a guitar player so I frequently pick a guitar up and noodle! Sometimes it’s good, sometimes not…. Either which way I play, and sometimes I’m inspired. (different tunings are great for making you go in a new direction) I play a keyboard. That brings something different. I’m forced out of my comfort zone (and habits) on the guitar and travel somewhere else. Different ideas. I use a DAW (digital audio workstation) and that lets me programme sequences, shake them up, add in variable probabilities. Use digital manipulation. It takes me to a different place. I have to work much harder at words. I write ideas and thoughts down, I revisit them, I decide they’re terrible, sometimes I like them, and it leads to something I’m happy(!) with! The thing that I have discovered, and brings most results, is that you’ve just got to work at it. The more I explore, the more I generate ideas. Not always good enough, but the more you have, the more you can filter and keep the best stuff. And store the rest for a dull day when you need a starting point. So I try to create something every day. Mostly it’s fun. Sometimes it’s good. And sometimes I finish it. The more that you do, the more you get.
